The following are the entry requirements for enrolling in the various education programs of the ICMA.

Professional – Level Programs

  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA Program)
    Degree in Accounting, Commerce or Finance, or an MBA*, from a recognised university (see FAQ) or Professional Qualification in Accounting. Applicants having other degree equivalent qualifications will also be considered on a case-by-case basis and may be asked to complete specific Graduate Conversion subjects prior to being admitted to the CMA programme. Prospective students may be required to undertake further studies and/or assessments by Recognised Provider Institutions (RPI) in different regions prior to undertaking the CMA program. [NOTE: CMA membership requires the successful completion of the CMA Program (2 post-graduate level subjects)] and 5 years business experience.
  • Certified Global Business Analyst (CGBA Certification Program)
    Degree or professional qualifications in all business fields (marketing, management, finance, banking, accounting etc.) OR senior managers with over 10 years of business experience; and the successful completion of the CGBA Certification Program (1 post-graduate level subject) plus a minimum of MAA membership of the ICMA. On completion of the program, a minimum of 5-years of business experience required for CGBA Certification, which is given for 3-years (and includes free MAA membership for this period).
  • Associate Management Accountant (AMA)
    Degree in Accounting, Commerce or Finance, or an MBA*, from a recognised university (see FAQ) or Professional Qualification in Accounting; AND either completion the CMA preparatory program or 3 years relevant experience.
  • Graduate Management Accountant (GMA)
    Degree in Accounting, Commerce or Finance, or an MBA*, from a recognised university (see FAQ) or Professional Qualification in Accounting. No business experience required.
  • Graduate Management Accountant (via GMA Conversion Program)
    Non- Accounting or Finance Degree from a recognised university (see FAQ) or a Non-Accounting Professional Qualification (NOTE: AMA membership requires the successful completion of the GMA Conversion program (i.e. 4-subjects of Stage Four of the GMA Program, but taught at a honours/masters level) and 3-5 years business experience; and GMA membership requires the successful completion of the GMA Conversion Program. There are no experience requirements.)

Technician – Level Programs

  • Graduate Management Accountant (GMA Program)
    Degree in Accounting, Commerce or Finance, or an MBA*, from a recognised university (see FAQ) or Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of the 4-stage Graduate program. Note that to join as a Graduate Management Accountant (GMA), the student must obtain a degree in any discipline before, during or after the completion of the graduate-level program. There are no experience requirements.
  • Registered Business Accountant (RBA Program)
    Degree (Bachelors) in any discipline other than Accounting from a recognised University, or an Advanced Diploma in Accounting from a recognised Technical College (TAFE) or 3 Stages of a Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of Stages 1,2 & 3 of the ICMA’s Graduate program. (NOTE: RBA membership requires the successful completion of the RBA education requirements. There are no experience requirements).
  • Registered Cost Accountant (RCA Program)
    Diploma in Accounting from a recognised Technical College (TAFE) or 2 Stages of a Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of Stages 1 & 2 of the ICMA’s Graduate program. (NOTE: RCA membership requires the successful completion of the RCA education requirements. There are no experience requirements).
  • Certified Accounting Technician (CAT Program)
    Certificate in Accounting from a recognised Technical College (TAFE) or Stage 1 of a Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of Stage 1 of the ICMA’s Graduate program. (NOTE: CAT membership requires the successful completion of the CAT education requirements. There are no experience requirements).
  • Management Accounting Affiliate
    Open Entry for those interested in the field of Management Accountancy. There are no education or experience requirements.

Student Memberships

  • Student Member
    Open Entry for those undertaking the education programs of ICMA. There are no education or experience requirements.
  • University Student Member
    Open Entry for those undertaking the education programs at any recognised university in Australia and overseas. There are no education or experience requirements.

* These are minimum entry requirements. Prospective students may be required to undertake further studies by Recognised Provider Institutions (RPI) in different regions. Those seeking entry with an MBA degree must have earned it from an accredited or government recognised University AND the degree holder had been admitted to the MBA program after completing an undergraduate degree in any discipline or had an equivalent recognised professional qualification AND had done the subjects Financial Management and Management Accounting (or equivalent) as part of their MBA degree program. Those who were admitted to their MBA program based on experience only, will need to submit their CV to ICMA to evaluate if they can be admitted to the CMA program. Those not having taken the Financial Management and Management Accounting subjects in their MBA degree can undertake these at any university, or by undertaking these within ICMA’s own GMA Conversion Program which can be done at a Recognised Provider Institution or Online.
